I also had the pleasure of working with John as part of the Science Department at Thornlea Secondary School in the early 1990s. John was a friendly and supportive colleague. We also both had young sons. We had a house fire during that time, and lost all our baby clothes and stuff. For weeks following the fire, John worked bring care packages of clothing, food and even small appliances and leave them at my desk. What a guy! John and I reconnected by chance two years ago. We both retired to eastern Ontario, and both are very involved in choral singing. Our different choirs have sung together at numerous concerts since then, and I always enjoyed catching up with John on those occasions. Our choir will be singing with the Martello Alley Cats next month, and I’m sure that will all sing a song in tribute to Sedge! Bill Elgie

John and I worked in the Science Department of Thornlea Secondary School. John was a dedicated physics teacher. We worked together on physics lessons, lab instructions and tests usually for long hours after school, frequently after 6 pm! I will miss his smiles and beautiful singing voice. Ping Lai

John and I were best friends since 1959 when we both started high school at York Mills. In grade 11 we launched a band called The Coachin’ Four. At Queen’s we shared an apartment and in 1967 John sent me a birthday card saying “to my FINK roommate“. On his next birthday I sent the card back to him. For almost 50 years this card has gone back-and-forth between us, to England, France and Australia, never missing a birthday, always adding a short note. This card tells the stories of our lives and now John will not be adding any more stories. My condolences and my love to Shauna, Megan and Jack. May John rest in peace. Bruce Amos

John and I arrived in the Science dept of Thornlea SS at about the same time. In fact we often argued as to who really got hired first. For many years our desks in the Sci office were beside each other which gave us opportunities to chat about other events in our lives besides school. We both shared a love of music and singing in choirs. John hosted many memorable corn roasts for both the science dept. and entire school at his house in Gormley. He was well loved and respected by his students and colleagues. He was a person of many talents and interests and a wonderful family man when it came to his children and I am sure his grandchildren too. My sincere condolences go out to all his family.
