Obituary of William Westran Pratt
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Westran Pratt, who was found deceased on May 19, 2025. He was 68 years old.
Bill was a beloved brother known for his sensitive heart and deep passion for travel and adventure. He touched the lives of many with his free spirit, and inspired us to never stop looking at the world with wonder. Whether sneaking across country borders, sitting around a campfire having a beer or playing baseball with neighbourhood kids, Bill immersed himself in the many cultures through which he traveled and often learned the local languages (he spoke Spanish fluently). Although Bill never chased titles or collected many things other than his beloved maps and postcards, he left behind something more enduring: stories, laughter, and the inspiration to live freely.
In his younger years, Bill was an accomplished athlete, competing in hockey, baseball and football. He was later known for his amazing endurance biking throughout Canada and the world.
Though Bill faced a private struggle with depression following the death of his beloved mother, Helene Pratt, his life was filled with moments of adventure, strength, and love. Mental illness is a profound and often invisible challenge, and Bill’s passing reminds us of the importance of compassion, support, and understanding for all who struggle. We hope that he has now found the peace that eluded him in his final days.
Bill is survived by his sister, Holly Gordon, and his brothers Andrew (Kathy) and James (Jeanne Madej). He leaves behind his many nieces and nephews: Courtney Gordon; David Pratt; Jonathan Pratt and wife Deidre and their son Neil ; Joshua Pratt; Elisabeth Pratt; Caleb Pratt; Harrison Pratt; and Charleigh Pratt — all of whom will cherish Bill’s memory always.
In lieu of flowers, take a trip to somewhere you have never been, remembering that Bill had probably already visited there and his spirit is waiting to greet you.
