My wonderful neighbor Roy Harris.
It was sad to hear today of Roy’s passing. He leaves behind for me and my family a long string of great memories.
Roy was a wonderful neighbor and always a gentleman. He, together with Veronica, became cherished friends.
I built their custom home on the lake, a pleasant, happy and fulfilling experience for me.
Roy was generous with me selling me the property next door where I eventually built our home. In doing so he greatly impacted my family’s quality of life derived from the natural beauty and resources of the location as well as the social interaction as a caring neighbor.
Memories of Roy surround me. When I walk my property, he usually comes to mind as I enjoy several species of beautiful trees that he planted, Black Walnut, Butternut, Manchurian walnut, Red oak and Black Locust to name some. My shop is located on Harris Point Lane. I see his name on my road sign and on the mail that I receive best of all they are all good memories and there many more.
The phrase that characterizes Roy for me is “He served”.
He served England his native country. He served and protected his community as a police officer.
In Toronto he again served in law enforcement. In Kinston he served his community a penitentiary guard and a long-time volunteer at KGH. In Westport he served on council, and at the Legion. At his campground he served his campers and made available to them the lake experience that I am sure they all cherished.
In the Gospel of Mark chapter 10: 43-45 Jesus highlights the importance of serving.
“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave to all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Thank you for serving Roy, may you rest in peace. Veronica, my condolences to you and all the family.
