Hugh Huntting

Obituary of Hugh Campbell Huntting

Hugh C. Huntting, June 23, 1934 -January 20, 2026

Hugh passed away peacefully at Providence Care Hospital at the age of 91 years. He will be greatly missed by Edie (Gerald), Matthew (Michelle), Jocelyne (Michael), Kate (Rick), dear Charlene, all his nieces and nephews and all his friends.

Hugh was a very bright and kind gentleman, with his own personal style of humour. He lived his life to the fullest and provided his family and friends with many wonderful memories.

The early years were first spent in Winnipeg and then in Minneapolis. Eventually he returned to Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba, where he met Liz.

Different phases of his life included:

  • The motorcycle phase – picking Liz up for a first date dressed in leather
  • The train phase
    • trainspotting at the age of five
    • His life’s career with CN and then CPR, riding the trains through the “bush & bog” of Northern Ontario, learning “all things trains” and eventually moving to Montreal and Calgary to complete his career with the CPR
    • His passion for small gauge model trains that found a spot in every place he lived
    • Building a train that ran through his yard for his own amusement and that of all the kids that he and Liz entertained
    • …and let us not forget the Christmas tree train
  • Horses (especially Dirty Harry) and learning to ride
  • His love of music – learning to play the guitar and going to guitar camp; listening to Wagner’s operas, right to the end
  • His penchant for old radio shows (“Easy Silver. Steady big Fella!”) and movies, including all the Frankenstein films and The Day the Earth Stood Still (“Klaatu barada nikto!”)
  • Fitness and well-being, be it cross-country skiing, tai chi or going to the gym to see Steph
  • His unwavering devotion to his late wife Liz, to his granddaughter Jocelyne, as well as his family and friends.

Hugh’s family is most grateful for all the caregivers and friends who ensured his comfort during the last stages of his life, especially those at the Kingston Family Health Team, St. Lawrence Place, Cataraqui Heights, and Providence Care Hospital.   A private burial is planned for the spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada or The Stratford Festival.
