Obituary of Herbert Gordon Mylks

Kingston, Ontario - Herbert Gordon "Gord" Mylks, J.D., passed away on January 21, 2026, at Trillium Care Community.

Gord was predeceased by his grandparents, Dr. Herbert G. Murray and his wife Jane of Owen Sound, and Dr. Gordon W. Mylks Sr. and his wife Lucy of Kingston; his birth father, Dr. Ronald B. Murray of Owen Sound; his adoptive father from age three, Dr. Gordon W. Mylks Jr. of Kingston; his birth mother, Helen Isobel Murray (née Mylks) of Kingston; and his sisters, Barbara Helen Diamant (late Nick) and Nancy Bethune (late Bud).

He is survived by his loving spouse, Dawn Switzer (née Thompson); his dear children Julie (James), Christine (Rew), Gord (Cindy) Mylks, and Emily Sharp (Rob). Gord was the proud and devoted grandad of Caroline, William, and James Sharp. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews and their extended families, the Thompson family, and many dear friends.

Gord received his early education at Victoria Public School and K.C.V.I. in Kingston, later attending Albert College in Belleville. He earned his B.A. from Loyola College in Montreal and his J.D. from Queen's University Law School. He practised law in Amherstview and Odessa, and later served as the property and maintenance manager of the Royal Canadian Legion Villa. He retired in 2009.

Gord was a long time member and officer of Branch #631 of the Royal Canadian Legion, a past president of the board of directors of the Royal Canadian Legion Villa in Kingston, and a past president of the Kingston Frontenac Rotary Club. He was a dedicated Mason, serving as an officer and past master of Prince Arthur Lodge #228 in Odessa and Maple Leaf Lodge #119 in Bath. He was also a charter member of Templum Fidelis Lodge #746 in Bath, a member of the Lodge of Perfection in Kingston, and a 33rd degree Inspector General of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Canada.

Gord was cremated, and interment will take place in the Mylks family plot at Cataraqui Cemetery in the spring.
