Mariella Morrin

Obituary of Mariella Cartwright Coe Morrin

Mariella C.C.  Morrin

1936-2026

It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of Mariella Morrin (née Coe) at home on April 16, 2026, in her 90th year, after many years of declining health.

Pre-deceased by her parents, Robert & Mariella (née Cartwright) Coe, and by her husband of 47 years, Dr. Peter A.F. Morrin. Survived by her three sons, Peter (Donna), Hugh (Sharon) and Robin (Ingrid); her six grandchildren, Eric, Austin, Madeleine, Hugh, Kathryn and Alexandra; her cousins, Georgia Pettus, March McCormack and Melissa Grewenow; and brother-in-law, Francis Morrin.

Born in St. Louis, MO, she earned a BA in Psychology from Washington University, and started a masters, before meeting the love of her life. After marrying in 1960, she and Peter moved to Kingston in 1961. In 1967, she designed and built the family home which served her to the end.   During the family sabbatical to Paris (1975-1976), she earned her Diploma (Patisserie) from the Cordon Bleu.

She was a talented chef, gardener, and teacher, who owned and operated the Art of Cooking School, and she was renowned for hosting wonderful parties at the family home. She was an avid sailor and skier who took up both sports in adulthood and, despite debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, continued both activities well into her 70s. Perhaps more than anything, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend to so many. Despite more than her share of medical issues, she never complained, even as the advanced skin cancer progressed in her final months.

A funeral will be held at the St. James Chapel, at the back of St. Mary’s Cathedral, in Kingston, ON, on Thursday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m. A reception for family and friends will follow the mass. There will be no visitation.

A recording of the funeral is available at <https://youtu.be/0RuXof7RPpo>https://youtu.be/0RuXof7RPpo;

highlights include Monsignor Joseph Lynch's homily which begins at 7:18, and Robin's tribute to our mother which begins at 38:17.

The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers, nurses and, more recently, palliative care physicians, who provided her care over the past ten years, and to all our family and friends who have been so supportive, both to our mother and to us, on this difficult journey.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Kingston Health Sciences Centre through the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (uhkf.ca/inmemory), or any charity of your choosing.
