It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived that the family of Catherine (Katie) Elaine Carmichael announces her peaceful passing on July 12, 2026.

Katie was the beloved wife of the late Dr. John Alexander Carmichael (1928–2006)

She is lovingly remembered by her four children: Elspeth Carmichael, Jane Carmichael Nixon, Malcolm Carmichael, and Sally Carmichael Robertson. They will remember her for her genuine interest in others, her sparkling personality, infectious sense of humour, and remarkable capacity to make everyone feel seen and valued. She was their champion, role model, and dearest friend.

Katie's grandchildren were a source of immense joy. Christopher Nixon, Katie Nixon Sullivan, Sarah Carmichael, Emma Carmichael, Katy Carmichael, and Holly Hamilton will remember her with deep affection and gratitude for the many happy times they shared together. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Wyatt and Casey Sullivan, and Jack and Miles Nixon.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Katie graduated from Peterborough Collegiate before earning her degree from the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.

A gifted painter with a discerning eye, Katie was a lifelong lover and supporter of the arts. She found great joy in creating, collecting, and celebrating art, and exhibited her own work alongside fellow Kingston artists. 

Her love of music and culture was reflected in her support of the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, and she generously championed organizations that enriched her community, including the Kingston Community Foundation, the Kingston Symphony, the Agnes Etherington Art Center, and the Kingston Medical Wives Association. She believed deeply in giving back and enriched countless lives through both her philanthropy and her lifelong friendships.

An enthusiastic tennis player, Katie brought the same energy to the court that she brought to every aspect of her life; spirited, gracious, and always ready for laughter. 

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who cared for Katie with kindness and compassion in her final days.

A celebration of Katie's life will be held in Kingston at a later date.
