Obituary of Donald Malcolm McNaughton

Major (ret’d) Donald Malcolm McNaughton CD, BA, MHA

1933 – 2026

Don was the elder son of Elta and Earl McNaughton (his youngest brother (Robert Frederick) predeceased him). He is survived by his beloved wife, Liz and sons Scott (Mary Lou) and Robb (Harumi), grandchildren Alisa, Teo and Leo.

Born and raised in Kitchener, Don attended Waterloo College (now Sir Wilfred Laurier University) and graduated with a general arts degree. In his last year of university, he joined the Regular Canadian Army and on graduation, was posted to the Signals Corps in Kingston, Ont. After transferring to the Medical Corps, he was accepted in the US Medical Corps Hospital Administration Program run by Baylor University at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He obtained his MHA in 1967, after completing the program’s residency requirement at the Canadian Military Hospital in Halifax, NS.

In 1971, when the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax expanded to 600 beds and Don had completed his obligation to the army, he became chief administrative officer at the VG. During his time there, he was responsible for daily administration of the non-medical functions of the hospital, as well as participating in a number of special projects e.g. the development of the Halifax County Medical Services Disaster Response System and the Task Group for the installation of 911 service in Nova Scotia.

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, Ontario on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 1:00 pm, with a Reception to follow.
