Remembering David Schmidt

Surrounded by his family and closest friends, David Schmidt passed away peacefully at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) due to complications from a heart attack on October 19, 2023. He was 49 years young.

David will be greatly missed by friends and family, and the loss will be felt strongly in the Kingston business community and around the world.

Survived by his wife Lorraine, his children Ian (Jenny), Jack, and Malaika, his brother Dana (Adele), his father Oswald (Sue McColl), nieces, nephews, and a vast network of friends and family, David was predeceased by his mother Sharon Schmidt.

Born on April 16, 1974, in Lusaka, Zambia, David’s love of computers and technology was sparked when he attended the International School of Kenya from 1985 to 1992. He moved to Kingston at age 18 to attend Queen’s University.

David took Computer Science at Queen’s, but did not complete his degree because the professors couldn’t teach him anything he didn’t already know. Those who knew him know that he was a genius in his field, and the worldwide IT community has lost a very valuable member.

An entrepreneur since 1995, David began his first business Rogue Design and Development, and then began the business that would be his legacy, Fusix Corporation, in 2001. At the time, he was recognized as one of the first recipients of KEDCO’s Entrepreneur of the Year award. This business will be carried on by his long-time business partner and friend Patrick Foley and their exceptional staff.

In recent years, David joined many online Ketogenic support groups in pursuit of better health. Having had success with this lifestyle, David started the Keto Judgement Free Zone Facebook community to help inform and support others on their own ketogenic journeys. Through these groups he has made many friends across the world, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and were supported by him.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at the Quality Inn and Conference Centre, 33 Benson Avenue, Kingston, in the Cartier Room. Those who wish to drop by may do so between 1 and 5 p.m. for David-approved snacks, stories, and friendship.

Anyone who knew David knows he was not a formal sort of man. The dress code for this event, in honour of David, is jeans and graphic t-shirts. No formal wear please. David also hated rhubarb and mushrooms with the passion of a thousand suns, so rest assured you won’t find any at the afternoon celebration.
