Obituary of Catherine Anne MacEachen

Passed away following a brief illness on January 12th at age 87 in Kingston, Ontario, surrounded by her children. Born in Halifax, eldest child and of Agnes and Jack Connors.

Anne went to Acadia University where she studied chemistry. After university, with a diploma in hand, Anne adventurously travelled alone to northern Quebec to take up a position in the chemical labs of Alcan Aluminum, in Arvida. She lived initially at Arvida’s Saguenay Inn with many other young scientists from around the world, who became lifelong friends.  There she met Bill (Wilbert MacEachen), a young man from Nova Scotia who would later become her husband.

Together they had four children. When she became a mother she ended her career as a chemist and threw all her efforts into providing a secure and lively home for her family while also taking on occasional school teaching.  The children have many memories of summer camping trips to and from Nova Scotia, freshly baked deserts and family board game nights.

Anne and Bill moved away from the Saguenay to Montreal’s West Island in 1979 when Bill was transferred to the Alcan head office. After Bill’s retirement they chose to move to Kingston Ontario, to join many of their Arvida friends who already lived there. Anne joined the Kingston Duplicate Bridge Club, played in bridge tournaments and became a Gold Life Master. Until the COVID lockdowns, Anne played bridge four times a week.

Ann was predeceased by Bill, who passed away in 2004. Anne will be sorely missed by her sister Barbara, and her children Ian (Madeleine), Ellen (Walter), Bryan (Olga) and Martha, as well as her nine grandchildren (Jessica, Emma, Thomas, Caiti, Michelle, Caroline, Patrick, Megan and Kate) and great grandson Calvin.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Kingston General Hospital for their care and compassion.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 11am at St. Paul The Apostle Church (1111 Taylor Kidd Boulevard, Kingston), followed by a reception in the Common Room (main floor) at 1066 King Street, Kingston.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Kingston General Hospital.
