Obituary of Gerald Edmond Munro

Gerald E. Munro Warrant Officer (Ret’d), RCAF, Kingston, ON, passed peacefully on December 18, 2014 after a long and full life. He was 93 years young.Born in Clayton, New York, USA, he was the loving son of the late Mary Henrietta Bedard and Harold Munro; beloved husband of the late Margaret MacKay and the late Monica Virginia Lloyd.He was predeceased by his son Ric (Rhonda) of Medicine Hat, AB and is survived by his daughter Geraldine Boudreau (Donald dec) of Montreal, PQ, his son Barry (Nicola) of Bedford, NS and his son Gary of Lloydminster, AB. He was predeceased by brothers Howard, Orville and Stanley, and sisters Margaret Harding and Lois McLaren. He is survived by his brother Robert and sisters Mary Stallard and Helen Lundy. Gerry has nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.At an early age, Gerry’s family homesteaded in Kingston where his father worked at Canada Bread as a master baker. During WWII, Gerry answered the call having volunteered for active military service that landed him in England and subsequently as a member of a Liberation Squadron in Belgium and France and finally in Germany at Belsen Prison Camp. Following the War and his return to Canada, Gerry retired from active service and immediately reenlisted into the RCAF. In a variety of bases in southern Ontario and New Brunswick, Gerry served as an aviation technician and ground support to the renown Golden Hawks and other aircraft thereafter. He served for nearly thirty years in uniform having retired a Warrant Officer First Class from the service whilst at CFB Trenton. Of notable interest, he is recognized as the first person to occupy married quarters in Middleton Park at CFB Trenton.Following his military career, Gerry worked briefly for MacDonald Douglas Aircraft in Toronto, for the Toronto North Regional Correctional Centre and for the Ontario Provincial Police. As a hobby, Gerry enjoyed stamp and coin collecting. But his true talents were realized as a master mechanic wherein he welcomed the challenge of building, repairing and refurbishing just about everything and anything that was brought to his attention from motorcycles and cars, to household items and toys, to electrical units. Family and friends benefitted from his talents until his failing health prevented him from doing so.Gerry was laid to rest on May 1, 2015 with a fitting tribute attended by many family and friends wherein Amazing Grace, his favorite tune for such occasions, was played in his honour as a true WWII vet.
