Obituary of Gordon McArthur
Gordon (Red) McArthur, aged 88, died on February 17, 2016 surrounded by family at Kingston General Hospital. A proud veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, Gordon was pre-deceased by his wife Bernice, son Lee, brothers John, Charles, Donald, and Norman, and great-grandson Alexander, and friend Nina McCallum. Gordon and all his brothers were veterans of WWII. He is survived by his daughter Linda Comyn (Niall), daughter-in-law Dale Murray (Wayne), grandchildren Bryan Comyn (Aline), Lesley Lippold (Mark), Cory McArthur (Cory-Lee), Jana Hutt (Dane), Lindsey Davis (Jeffery), great-grandchildren Nikolas, Lydia, Brianna, Glauren, Rhys, Leia, and Sloane. He will be sadly missed by friends Stan and Alice Gay, Art Gilmour, Lois Taylor, Frank and Heather Hoffman, Dan and Wendy Bengtsson, and Daniel Tambur. A gathering to celebrate Gordon’s life will be held at the Kingston Naval Veterans Association, 1138 Sydenham Rd, Kingston, from 1 to 4 PM on March 5, 2016. All hands stand by to splice the mainbrace. Gordon was a founder and life member of the Navy Vets club, and was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion. For many years he placed Canadian flags on the graves of service personnel in the Cataraqui Cemetery for Remembrance Day. He was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Brigade Association. Gordon spent the last several months at Seeley’s Bay Retirement Home and he was very thankful for the excellent care he received from all the staff. He felt he was part of a big family there. He was also made welcome at the Seeley’s Bay Branch 491 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Gordon was a long-time canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and did volunteer tax preparation for Canada Revenue Agency. He was an ardent fisherman and loved sports (Tiger Cats, Black Hawks, Blue Jays, and Queen’s Golden Gaels). He recently lost the Seeley’s Bay Corridor Walker Race to his great grand-daughter, Leia. Burial will take place at the Cataraqui Cemetery on March 7, 2016 at 10:30 AM.“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation or the Salvation Army Kingston Citadel. Arrangements entrusted to CATARAQUI CEMETERY AND FUNERAL SERVICES.
