I am presently shocked to discover the passing of Prof. Filip Palda, a dear colleague and friend, and wish to extend my dearest sympathies to his wife and family. Filip was truly a vibrant mind, capable to work across (and often integrate) fundamental, theoretical, operational, and practical facets of economics. His mastery of Public Choice theory was at the frontier of the field, and each of his papers tried to solve problems that few had attempted, each time making progress for others to build upon. He was also a most sincere and honest man, with constant empathy for others attempting the academic career. I met Filip in 1990 at U of Ottawa, he taught me Macro III using Barro (1984). He kindly wrote a reference for my admission to MA at Carleton in 1991, for which I am forever grateful. We stayed in touch and met again in 1992 in Vancouver when he was Senior Econ. at Fraser Institute. Then again in 2000 in Montreal when he joined ENAP, a year before my PhD graduation. We connected again when he joined the ENAP Gatineau campus, as our 2 universities were working on more collaboration in graduate programs. I have kept since 1990 his copy of Advanced Econometrics, which he kindly granted to me on "indeterminate loan", which had been as well granted to him by one of his a colleagues of his at Chicago University (John Heaton I believe). He will be dearly missed, but his teaching will live always.

I've only just found out this terrible news – I had wondered why I didn't receive the usual pithy email on the state of tennis during the US open. I knew Filip was sick, but he hadn't let on how bad it was. Filip was a couple of years ahead of me at the University of Chicago and became a great friend, one of the few I've kept in touch with. When I think back on graduate school, I mainly remember the great times we had together – steak nights, dinners at Thai 53rd, games of tennis and lots of wine and interesting conversations – peppered with Filip's insightful comments on life and economics. As he said in one of his last emails to me, "I have ideas exploding out of my head". I am fortunate that there was someone like him to brighten up life in Hyde Park in the 1980s. He was unconventional which meant his career was as interesting as he was – and he ended up where he belonged, an academic producing valuable, interesting and readable work. It's tragic to lose someone like him so young. I'll really miss him.

Filip Palda was not only my best professor of economics, he was my mentor. I have the greatest admiration for his intellect and unlimited culture. He was a true Socratic economist with an exceptional ability to combine different perspectives. A true thinker. Notwithstanding all his outstanding professional intellectual qualities, Professor Palda was extraordinarily humble and generous. He was a great human being. Every meeting and discussion with Filip Palda provided me with new horizons to explore. My pain is immense, but I know that the legacy of Filip will remain alive forever as many of his students and colleagues will continue to be inspired by him. My sincere condolences to his family. May God grant him paradise. Amen!

I first met Filip as a student at the University of Chicago more than 30 years ago and we rapidly became good friends, supporting each other during those grueling years in the Ph.D. program in economics. There are more anecdotes, stories and memories involving Filip during those years than I would ever have space for, but they still bring a smile to my face. Although we followed our own paths after Chicago, we did keep in touch and saw each other regularly over the years. I could go on about Filip's passion for economics, his great intellect, his curiosity, his ability to question received wisdom and the exceptional quality of his work. But above all, Filip was a great person – a bright, caring, generous, good-natured and exceptionally humble individual. He was a pleasure to be around. My sincere condolences to his family, relatives and friends. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace my friend. Rest in peace.

Filip was my best friend since high school. He was so clever that, even though we were the exact same age, he was two years ahead of me at school. We had a TV show together then called Kingston Youth Speak Out and cranked out propagandist newsletters on my Dad's photocopier. Filip inspired me my whole life, encouraging me through law school when he was already an established, heralded academic. When he wrote or spoke of his cancer he acted like 'it' was an opponent in the boxing ring. As much as I could love another human being I loved Filip, and I will miss him every day. My love goes out first & foremost to his beloved wife & partner Maria Palda, who took care of him until the last minute. Goodbye my kooky, brilliant pal. E

I was surprised to see Filip's obituary in the Whig and so deeply saddened by the news of his passing. I know that Fil was a leader among economists and know, too, that he was a force among men for his humility, loyalty, kindness, and compassion. He was respected and well loved, for he had character and a big heart. I will remember him not only for the engaging discussions, but also as a devoted husband, loving and dutiful son, brother, and uncle. I am richer because I have had the benefits of his company and conversations. I wish his family comfort and strength during this difficult time. My prayers and heartfelt sympathy go out to all of them. Pat Vecchio

Filip was a colleague who contributed significantly to his discipline through his writings, his research, and his public interventions. Very few of us can demonstrate a mastery of public economics to the level Filip has reached; he was, however, of a great humility. He will be missed by his colleagues and students. I offer my deepest and sincere condoleances to his family and his relatives.
