Obituary of Daniel Ross Atack
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Daniel Ross Atack at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KGH) on August 27, 2019 in his 93rd year. Beloved husband of the late Marion Atack for 68 years, Dan was particularly proud of the large extended family that he and Marion created. Loving father of Elizabeth (Peter), Diane (Brian), Barb (Rich) and Dan (Elizabeth). Grandfather to Kathryn, Janet, Andrew, Kelly, Lisa, Jessie, Willem, Gillian and Jakob. Great-Grandfather to Dryden, Emily, Thomas, William, Carter, Sophie, Evelyn, Teagan, Isla and Jack.Dan was a proud and lifelong Kingstonian, spending his early years living at Bellevue House, where in later years he loved to take his grandkids and great grandkids so they could see where he grew up. After graduating from KCVI, he was on to Queen’s University to study Chemical Engineering. While he enjoyed his studies, he would tell you the most important thing he did at Queen’s was meet Marion, the love of his life, over a dissected turtle. They were married after graduation and headed off to Bathurst, New Brunswick where Dan worked at Bathurst Power and Paper. After two years in Bathurst, Dan returned to Kingston in 1951 with pregnant wife in tow, to work for Dyeco Limited, where he eventually became President and Chairman of the Board until he sold the company and retired in 1989. While busy running Dyeco, Dan still found time to volunteer at the YMCA, Rotary Club, United Way and the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority. After his retirement, Dan overcame his dislike of flying, to travel the world with Marion to countless destinations around the globe.Dan was an avid golfer, joining Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in 1941 to “get out of his dad’s hair” and remained an active member until his passing. He also loved to fish, play tennis, cross country ski and curl and later in life he and Marion became quite involved with competitive bridge. He had a way with animals, and took great pleasure taking anyone that would go with him to feed the chickadees at Lemoine’s Point. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Stroke team on Kidd 7 at KGH, who made the last days of Dan’s life as peaceful as possible.A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 1pm at the CATARAQUI GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, 961 King St. W. Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area with instructions that the gift be directed to the Dan and Marion Atack Fund, which they established for the benefit of the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority for the purpose of conservation and education. Arrangements entrusted to CATARAQUI CEMETERY AND FUNERAL SERVICES.
