Obituary of Desmond O'Meara

Desmond O’Meara, born October 12, 1926, passed away peacefully at home on November 5, aged 93, just 3 months after the death of his wife of 66 years, Margaret Moore O’Meara. Born in Daingean, County Offaly, Ireland, son of John and Rebecca O’Meara, he is predeceased by his siblings Ailbe, Peggy and Bridaine. He is survived by his sister Rebecca and many nieces and nephews in England, Ireland, Belgium and Calgary. After completing a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in science at Trinity College, Dublin, he completed a PhD in Chemistry at St Andrews in Dundee. He and his young family immigrated to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada in 1958, before moving to Grand Mere Quebec in 1962 and then to Montreal in 1967, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. He retired to Kinston, Ontario, to pursue a keen interest in sailing. Father of John (Sylvia), Derek, Dennis, Ellen (Yves), Tim (Cathi) and Niall Patrick and grandfather to Sarah, Iain, Christopher, John and Elizabeth O’Meara, Darrell Waukey and great grandson John Papassay. Special thanks for his care givers Nancy, Bob, Kevin, Helen and Andrée. We could not have made it through the last few years without your contribution. Thank you to Mike Sayers for keeping him connected to his faith especially as his mobility reduced. He will be remembered for his conscientiousness to his family, friends and community, his Irish wit (which translated into endless Dad jokes) and deep love for potatoes at every meal and butter on everything. A service will be held at ST. MARY’S CATHEDRAL in the ST. JAMES CHAPEL, 279 Johnson Street, Kingston, Ontario on November 14, 2019 at 10am. A reception will follow (location to be announced). Arrangements entrusted to CATARAQUI CEMETERY AND FUNERAL SERVICES.
