Obituary of Helen Elizabeth Treleaven

We are sad to announce the passing of our mother, Betty Treleaven, on Saturday, December 27, 2015, in her 92nd year. She was born in Huntsville, Ontario on May 16, 1924, the daughter of Montague Henry Goslett (1883-1976) and Susanna Allison (Selkirk) Goslett (1883-1943), and was a younger sister to Montague William Goslett (1919-2005). She joins our Dad, her husband of 65 years, Willard Hilliard Treleaven, DDS (Sept. 22, 1921-July 6, 2015). She is survived by her five children - Allison (Karl), Errol (Mary-Jane), John, Doug (Ingrid), and Laura. Along with her grandchildren - Sean (Michelle), Jeff (Cheryl), Mark (Jocelyn), Kyle (Ashley), Alexandra (Darius), and Lauren (Jacob), and great-grandchildren - Madison, Lucas and Tyson. She will be fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews.Our mother’s journey began in Huntsville. Her family of four then moved to Newmarket and finally settled in Bowmanville. Our mother grew up spending her summers visiting relatives in the Muskokas and on Howe Island. After graduating high school, Mom sought a new challenge. She enrolled in Victoria College at the University of Toronto, as a student of linguistics. In 1948 Mom met our Dad, Trev, when they were both working the Christmas rush at the Yonge Street Post Office. They continued their education and in the spring of 1949 Mom graduated with her Bachelor of Arts Degree and went to work as a French translator at Eaton's. They married on May 20, 1950 at Hart House Chapel on the university grounds. When Dad graduated from dentistry in 1951, they left Toronto and moved to Winnipeg. In 1952, on the advice of their good friend, Dr. John Lyons, they relocated to Kingston and the family continued to grow. Over a decade Mom had 5 children and was very busy at home taking care of everyone. However, she also found the time to get involved in the Medical Wives Society and the Dental Society. She volunteered with the Crystal Figure Skating Club, school functions, church functions and the Women's Auxiliary. In 1996, the Kingston Dental Society presented her with an award for her contributions. Mom was the consummate hostess; her door was always open, and you could always be guaranteed a home-cooked meal or piece of hot apple pie and ice cream. Her hobbies included gardening, curling, reading, music, antiquing, the arts and bird-watching. Her love of travel, along with Dad's, took them around the globe a few times. In later years they shared their sense of adventure by inviting the children to join them on their journeys. Mom was a very compassionate person who embraced life and her role as a wife and mother. Her kindness was unconditional and touched everyone who had the good fortune to meet her. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Our family would like to thank the staff at Fairmount Home for all the care and support provided to both our parents while they resided there. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place. A wake will be held at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 Counter Street, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13th, followed by a graveside service at the Cataraqui Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kingston Humane Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
